It’s been a roller-coaster year for both Dickens and Kent Counties in rural West Texas. And though the reasons for the hang-onto-your-seats rides have been different, common denominators figure in: schools and energy.

Fourth on Burlington, a newly reimagined 4th of July celebration sponsored by the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce, featured a parade down Burlington, an ice cream making contest, games for children, and a hot dog/hamburger lunch and a Veterans tribute.

Lone Star Market and Café opened in Jayton in June, bringing the town its first general merchandise store since the Kent County General Store closed in September 2022 following a fire.

The Jayton Jaybirds football team repeated and won back-to-back State football championships defeating Richland Springs 99-54 December 17 at AT&T Stadium. Along the way in December, they defeated Benjamin in the quarterfinals and Klondike in the State semi-finals.

In November, voters in Kent and Dickens went to the polls and passed all of the state’s constitutional amendments that were on the ballot. In Kent County, the Jayton-Girard ISD Transportation bond measure passed with these results: FOR 163 AGAINST 72.

The biggest event of the year in Spur—Spur Homecoming—was a little earlier this year. September 18-20 and featured Homecoming Court coronation, a bonfire, a parade, the homecoming football game, and all-class meals, and it also marked the return of the Spur Art Guild art show, a perennial favorite.
