UIL plans to complete all Spring sports State Championships

SAN ANTONIO—After four games, the University Interscholastic League pulled the plug on the boys’ state basketball tournament. It took awhile, but the UIL followed the lead of the NBA and NCAA by suspending the rest of the tournament Thursday afternoon.

Slidell stops Jayton; UIL stops state tournament

The best thing about Jayton’s 2020 state tournament appearance was that it happened. Many Texas teams never got to take the court after the University Interscholastic League suspended action on the 2020 boys’ basketball tournament as a response to concern over the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

South Plains Electric Cooperative offers teacher mini-grants for 2020–21 school year

Lubbock-based South Plains Electric Cooperative, Inc., has announced they will select 10 teachers from around the area to receive $500 minigrants to help fund studentbased projects or educational field trips in the 2020–21 school year.

Spur, Patton Springs make strong showing in Golden Spur track meet

STAFF REPORTS In the 2020 Golden Spur Relays, held March 12, boys and girls from six area varsity and junior varsity school teams participated in more than twenty track and field events at Jones Stadium in Spur.

BACK-TO-BACK

The Jayton Jaybirds basketball team has made history once more with a back-to-back ticket to the state championship tournament at the Alamodome in San Antonio. This is their second trip to the Texas UIL final four in two years.

BI-DISTRICT CHAMPS

BI-DISTRICT CHAMPS The Spur Bulldogs won the bi-district championship last Tuesday night by defeating Knox City 60-32 in Hamlin. They advanced to the area game, where they lost by 1 point in the final seconds of the game to Westbrook.

AREA TITLE

AREA TITLE The Paducah Dragons won the Area title Friday night by defeating the Hamlin Pied Pipers 72–52 in Munday. Paducah then faced the Hermleigh Cardinals Tuesday at Abilene McMurray in the regional quarterfinals.
