DICKENS—Amelia Garces Sanchez, 86, of Dickens, Texas, entered heaven’s gates Saturday, January 16, 2021.

Amelia was born January 5, 1935, in Divine, Texas, to Jesus and Lupe Garces. She married Eliborio Sanchez on July 15, 1959, in Warren, Minn. They would later move to Dickens, Texas, to call it home and raise their family.

Amelia was a kind, sweet soul who knew no stranger. She was hard-working and not only cared for her family but also for those in the community for many years as a home health provider. She loved unconditionally and found her greatest joy in loving and spending time with her family. She was a phenomenal cook and had a gift of making a little go a long way. Friends and family could not get enough of her tamales, menudo and tortillas. She enjoyed spending time gardening, tending to her flower beds, painting rocks and sewing. This world had a little piece of heaven with her here and our lives are richer for knowing her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Eliborio “Buddy” Sanchez; her parents; a son; two sisters; and one brother.

Those left to cherish her memory are children Mary Villanueva (Victor) of Lubbock, Texas, Julie Overstreet of Dickens, Darlene Sanchez of Dickens, Juan Sanchez (Donna) of Lubbock and Valentine Lewis (Stephen) of Carlsbad, New Mexico; eleven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dickens County Senior Center in Dickens.

A graveside service was held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2021, at the Dickens Cemetery with Roy Sanchez Jr. officiating under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home.
