Historic bell rung to officially install Spur VFD in its state-of-the-art new home

The ceremonial bell on display at the Spur Fire station is a relic from the 1950 American LaFrance fire engine that is now housed at the Science Spectrum museum in Lubbock.
COLOR GUARD comprising members of fire and police departments from across West Texas opened Saturday’s program to dedicate the firehouse at Third and Burlington in Spur, a gift of the Swenson family., which was completed this spring. Representing the Lubbock Fire Department were Blake Ball. (Spur Class of 1995), Mark Belcher, Wesley Crumpler, Brent Smith (retired); Permian Basin First Responders Pipe & Drum Corps, Andrew McElroy, Kayla Hogan, Joe Galindo.

The eagle-topped chromebell, it’s said, these days symbolizes the one that sounded a fire alarm back before telephones or other signals, or that rang to honor a fallen firefighter. But it also serves a happier purpose, according to Spur fire chief Wess Abbott.
