SJHS CHEERLEADERS According to sponsor Paige Castellon, the Bullpup cheerleaders had a fantastic three days of camp last week. She said they learned lots of new cheers and dances, worked on perfecting stunts and laughed all the way ay home. Erin McGalliard won the Jump Off for the entire camp with her impressive toe touch, pike, and hurdler.
SPEC’s annual membership meetings for 2021 have been scheduled, around the region. All members are welcome to attend; there is no charge and no need to register in advance.
GUTHRIE JAGUARS NEW FOOTBALL COACH Jeff Denton has been named the new head football coach at Guthrie High School. Denton comes to Guthrie from Big Spring, where he was an assistant football and track coach the last three years. Last week, Spur’s Madison Givens, valedictorian of the Spur High School Class of 2021, travelled across the globe with Baba’s Glory, a non-profit ministry that operates worldwide. The mission group has been in Arusha, Tanzania. Locals have been able to follow photos and updates on the Spur First United Methodist Church Facebook page. Givens is slated to return from Africa on July 8.
SUMMER BASKETBALL The Spurettes varsity girls wrapped up their summer basketball the last week in June. They played 10 games in two days at New Home, and in total played 35 games this spring and summer.
LEADERSHIP LEARNING Members of the JGISD school board attended the Texas Association of School Boards’ Summer Leadership Institution to learn ways to better serve JGISD students and the community. School Board members are BJ Baldridge, Amanda McGee, L’Rae Lee, Jeff Arnold, Cody Stanaland and Cody Scott; superintendent is Layne Sheets.
SMOKEY IN SPUR The USDA Forest Service brought a special guest to the Spur Library the last week in June for the Summer Reading Program. Smokey the Bear was on hand to greet youngsters as the forest service told the story of a young cub decades ago in New Mexico sparked a national movement about preventing forest fires.
