Kayla Cassandra Lewis, 1944–2020

“Sandy” Lewis, 76, of Dickens, Texas, entered heaven’s gates on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, in Crosbyton, Texas.

Sandy was born in Spur, Texas, on March 3, 1944, to Walter Ray and Pauline (Day) Bateman. She grew up in Afton, Texas, and graduated from Patton Springs High School. Sandy married the love of her life, Jerry Lewis, on December 24, 1961, in Afton. They were blessed to have three sons and a loving family.

Sandy was no stranger to hard work, living most of her life on a farm near East Afton, Texas. She held many jobs throughout her lifetime, but spent most of her working career as bookkeeper for the East Afton Gin and working with the Boll Weevil Eradication Program.

Some of her favorite pastimes consisted of playing dominoes, bird watching, fishing with a cane pole, playing “Outsiders” volleyball and hunting arrowheads. She was a member of the Dickens Methodist Church.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Stanley Bateman and Ray Bateman Jr., and sisters Nan Bilberry and Cherry Degraffenreid.

Those left to cherish her memory are three sons, Stephen Lewis (Val) of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Shannon Lewis (Brandy) of Farmington, New Mexico, and James Lewis (Julie) of Dickens, Texas; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and hosts of nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Dickens Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Marvin West under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home.
