Shirley Whitefield, 1946–2020

SPUR—Shirley Whitefield was born on January 12, 1946, to parents Elmer and Ethel Long of Girard, Texas. She was the youngest of three children; older sister Bernice Watson resides in Jayton, Texas, and brother James Long of Girard preceded her in death.

Shirley has three nieces, Kay Crow, Patti Haley and Angie Baily. She also has four nephews, Edwin Long, Bob Long, Don Long and Ronnie Watson. A nephew, Mike Watson, preceded her in death. She also has many great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Shirley married Jimmy Whitefield on June 20, 1964. They made their home in Spur, Texas, and have two children, Paula Sexton and Jay Whitefield; Paula and husband Joe Sexton and daughter Rilee Sexton live in Lubbock. Jay and his wife, Kyley Whitefield, also live in Lubbock.

Shirley was a homemaker, a wonderful mother and an exceptional grandmother. She volunteered for many community projects. She was a big fan of Texas Tech sports.

Shirley passed away after a lengthy illness on December 15, 2020. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday December 17, 2020, at Spur Memorial Cemetery in Spur, under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers a donation to the Spur Area Food Bank may be made.
