Border security, tax relief and raises top list

For the Texas House and Senate, there is not much daylight between each chamber’s priorities in this year’s legislative session. Leaders say the focus will be on property tax relief, border security and employee raises.

After reading a Washington Post editorial today about the new dress code for women in the Missouri State Legislature, I feel my head starting to explode. This could get both problematic and messy. Before I lose my ever-lovin’ mind, let me rant.

Local municipal, school board elections open for candidate filings

Cities and school boards in Dickens and Kent Counties are now accepting applications for candidates to run for city councils and school boards, as of January 18. The deadline for candidates to file is Friday, February 17. In municipal elections, the following positions will be on the May 6 ballot.

Seeking local resources for addiction center

I am currently looking for facilities which could house up to ten people one to use for women, the second facility for men. These facilities would be used to help people who cannot go to treatment centers for addiction. This is a problem in every small town, large town and city in the United States.

Speaker open to resort-style casinos in state

House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, told The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets that he is open to bringing resort-style casinos to Texas. But don’t expect to find slot machines in 7-Eleven stores if casino gambling is legalized.

The sweetest Labrador

This week my daughter Emily and her family will say goodbye to their 15-yearold Labrador, Abbey. With two children who have not known life without their dog, the loss will be especially hard. It was the classic tale of college love, how Abbey came to be Emily’s.

Run for something

All of us have heard the stories of the glory days of our hometowns. “Nowadays” may not be as vibrant and bustling as things were in the good old days. But here’s the good news. There’s always potential for improvement.
